The institute is dedicated to empirical social research and consultancy in all labour-related issues such as organisation development, personnel development, change management, labour market, vocational training, health and safety, regional development, technology assessment, etc. Originally founded in 1946, it became an institute of the land with the explicit mission to focus on industrial and social change processes. sfs understands itself as a competence centre for an old industrial region, the Ruhr Area. Since 1 January 2007 sfs is a central research unit of the University of Dortmund.

At present, with about 75 employees and a current annual turnover of EUR 4.0 million, sfs is one of the largest centres in empirical labour-related research in Germany.

sfs will participate in all activities of the project contributing its special expertise, also acting as one of the continuity factors with the original SAETO project.
