EU Funded Mobile Learning Projects               socrates_logo_120

ECLO has been very fortunate to be involved in a number of EU funded projects in the domain of m-learning or the ise of mobile technologies in education.

Below can be found an introduction to them and a link where further information can be found.

The Role of Mobile Learning in European Education

The objective of this project is to bring this unprecedented ownership of mobile devices into European education and training. For this reason the first target group is Commission decision makers and decision makers in the 25 EU states to whom the products of the project will be personally sent. Further target groups are the students and institutions in the partner countries, and eventually in the whole 25 countries. The problem is that students use their mobile phones constantly but not yet in their education. The main activities, which will result in the products of the project, are: development of a policy document on the role of mobile learning, an overview of the role of mobile learning in the 25 states today, listing of achievements of mobile learning, pedagogical aspects of mobile learning, adapting ILT and e-learning materials to mobile learning, the development, adaptation, teaching and evaluation of mobile learning courseware for real students.

Using Wireless Technologies For Context Sensitive Education And Training

The concrete aims and objectives are to contribute to the continued development of mobile learning and to address the imbalance identified above between the availability of mobile devices and the lack of education and training provision on the sophisticated communications devices which every student in every EU country carries and uses constantly – except in education. It is now possible to envisage an audience for mobile learning content which is media rich, collaborative and always available to the user. Using established technologies such as GPS and SCORM, and developing for newer technologies such as RFID and Mobile Positioning, training content can be developed for both context sensitive and location based delivery. It is the role of this project and its objective to contribute to the advance of mobile learning by harnessing the latest technological developments in the field (GPS, RFID, Mobile Positioning) for learning. This will address the main objective identified in A5, to support the development of innovative ICT-based content, services, pedagogies and practice for Lifelong Learning.

The Impact of Technology on Distance Learning Students

Today distance education is a rich and complex sector containing five major fields of education and training provision :

  • Distance education – the provision of education and training at a distance by Open Universities, distance education institutions and distance education departments of conventional institutions
  • E-learning – e-learning is the provision of education and training via the world-wide web for students who study mainly as individuals using LM learning are so important that the European Commission has agreed to fund a Leonardo da Vinci References Material project on the topic.
